Butterflies at Nudagun

This painting shows Nudagun Springs which is Jabirr Jabirr country near Carnot Bay in the West Kimberley, Western Australia.
The springs are represented by the circular pattern of the dots. The two larger springs are totally surrounded by the saltwater mud plains and during high tides the salt water rises to the edge of the beautiful ferns surrounding the springs. The third spring is off the edge of the mud plain and is full of beautiful black butterflies that land all over your body. This spring is known as the butterfly springs.
In my culture these butterflies represent our ancestral spirits. My culture also tells us that a dream of green sea turtles represents girls or baby girls. I have used turtles to represent my daughters (including my nieces) which shows their link to this important area.
The Nudagun area is all soak country. Here you can dig a hole in the soil about 50cm deep and then put leaves in the hole. When you return about an hour latter the hole is full of fresh water.
Just inland from the springs is a small Aboriginal Community or outstation named after the springs, Nudagun. My father’s oldest brother lives here and he looks after the outstation and the springs. This area is very special for my family and this is where we stay when we return to Western Australia.
