Dugongs of the Nudagun Springs

This painting is of the dugongs coming into the bay were the fresh water seeps into the ocean. The Nudagun Springs are shown by the three yellow and black circular designs. The three springs are at Carnot Bay WA. Two of the springs are on the mud flat and become totally surrounded by salt water during large tides. The third spring is on dry land and is home to hundreds of butterflies that will land all over your body.  The Nudagun area is an important place for my family.
The colourful design central to the painting represents the underground water in the area. If you dig a hole in the sand fresh water will seep into the hole ready to drink. Leaves are placed over the hole to stop dirt and insects getting into the water.
The circle designs in the corners show the spring water coming to the surface.
The designs in the dugong are traditional carving designs. My father’s people often carve different items including sea shells and pearl shell, boab nuts and boomerangs.
